Frequently asked questions
The things people ring and ask. If yours is not here, ring me and it probably will be next week.
About us and how we work
What does a finance broker actually do?
We take one application and put it in front of the lenders most likely to approve it, then bring the offers back to you side by side. You are comparing real numbers from lenders who have already looked at your situation, rather than advertised rates that may have nothing to do with what you would be offered.
What does it cost me?
Nothing to talk to us, and nothing to get a pre approval. On most consumer lending the lender pays us a commission when a loan settles, and we tell you what that is before you sign anything. If a fee ever applies to your situation you will know the amount before we lodge anything, never afterwards.
Do you only arrange finance in the Waikato?
No. We are based in Hamilton and the service is nationwide. Almost everything is handled by phone, email and electronic signature, so where you are makes no practical difference to how quickly your application moves.
Applying
How long does an application take?
A pre approval is usually back within one business day, and often the same day if we have everything we need. From accepting an offer to money reaching the seller is typically one to three business days, depending on the lender and on how quickly the seller can provide their details.
Can I get finance before I have found the vehicle?
Yes, and it is the better order to do it in. A pre approval tells you exactly what you can spend and what the repayments look like, so you can negotiate as a cash buyer. Pre approvals normally hold for 30 to 60 days depending on the lender.
What do you need from me?
Photo identification, three months of bank statements, and proof of income, which is two recent payslips for most people or last year accounts if you are self employed. If you have already found the asset, send us the listing or the invoice as well.
Can I buy privately or at auction?
Yes. We arrange finance for purchases from dealerships, private sellers, auction houses and Trade Me. For a private sale we pay the seller directly once the security check on the asset comes back clear, which protects you from buying something with money still owing on it.
Credit and eligibility
Will applying hurt my credit score?
Talking to us does not touch your credit file. We only run a credit check once you have given consent, and we do that once, not once per lender. That matters: a file with six finance enquiries on it in a fortnight reads badly to every lender who looks at it afterwards, which is the usual cost of applying everywhere yourself.
Can I get finance with bad credit?
Often, yes. Defaults, arrears and a past insolvency all narrow the field rather than closing it, and several lenders on our panel price specifically for people rebuilding. Tell us the whole picture at the start. It is going to appear on the credit check anyway, and knowing early is what lets us go to the right lender first instead of collecting a decline.
I am self employed. Is that harder?
It is different rather than harder. Some lenders want two years of financial statements, others will work from bank statements and a good trading history, and a few have low documentation options for established businesses. Knowing which is which is most of the value we add here.
Rates, fees and repayments
What interest rate will I get?
It depends on your credit file, the asset, the term and the size of your deposit, which is why we do not publish a single headline number. The calculator on this site uses an indicative rate so you can see the shape of the repayments. The rate in your written offer is the real one.
What fees are there?
Typically a lender establishment fee, a PPSR registration fee, and on some lenders a monthly account fee. Every one of them appears in the disclosure statement you get before you sign, and we will walk you through it. If a number in that document surprises you, we have not done our job.
Can I pay the loan off early?
On most of the lenders we use, yes. Some charge an early repayment fee that reflects their cost, and the amount is set out in your contract. If paying it off early is likely, say so at the start and we will weigh that when we choose which lender to recommend.
Business and farm finance
Can my business claim the interest?
Interest on borrowing for a business asset is generally deductible, and the way the asset itself is treated depends on how the finance is structured. We are finance brokers rather than accountants, so we will tell you how the facility is structured and leave the tax treatment to your accountant.
Can repayments be structured around my season?
On agricultural and some equipment lending, yes. Several lenders will match repayments to payout timing or to a seasonal cash flow rather than charging twelve equal instalments. It is rarely offered unless you ask for it, so ask.
